Minneapolis was named by a schoolmaster, who combined the local word for "water" and the Greek word for "city." The winters are extremely cold and the summers are very warm and often humid. The city has twenty-two lakes, 153 parks and wide streets. Their park system has been touted as one of the best designed, maintained and financed in the United States. The system has been designed to allow for the preservation of geographical landmarks with connections to parkways. It was also designed so that there are nearby playgrounds for children, and a park within six blocks of each residence. Minneapolis has a ten-block shopping area, which is beautifully laid out with trees, flowers and a skyway system for shoppers or gazers.
Some of the more well-known people who were born in Minneapolis include, entertainer/music icon Prince, politician/entertainer/wrestler Jesse Ventura, and Charles Monroe Schulz who created one of the most popular and influential comic strips of all time; Peanuts.
